Message First of all, looks like I'll be replacing my 93TT's 5-speed tranny sooner than I thought.

Previous threads this week:

I was all set to try the Royal Purple Max Gear 75W90 as an alternative to my usual Redline MT-90, to see if that would help my 3rd/4th gear grind. Well, you should have seen what came out of my drain plug today: lots of metal shavings, and retaining clips!!

Ok, my questions for replacing the tranny are:
1) Is this really common? Have LOTS of TT owners had to replace their tranny? I'm just wondering if I'm in the minority, or the majority, here.

2) How strong is this newer 97+ spec version? Will it last significantly longer than the previous iterations?

3) I have a JWT Street Clutch that I've had in the car for 3 years and it only has 10,000km on it (6000 miles), no signs of slipping at all, either on the street, strip or on the dyno. As far as I can tell its still perfectly fine. I was thinking now would be a good time to get a lightened flywheel since I'll be dropping the tranny again (probably the RPS flywheel). Should I keep my JWT clutch, until its dead, or get a new clutch now? That's a $500 decision and I don't really want to have to spend more money than I have to right now.

4) What steps should I take to baby/break-in a *new* transmission? Should I run the standard gear oil for the first while, or something like Redline MT-90 right off the bat?

5) I still intend to continue my occasional dabbling in street legal drag racing. Any tips to help prolong the life of my tranny, even though it'll be seeing tough service occasionally?

6) Can I/should I keep my Woody short shifter? (I really love my woody!) I seem to recall some people felt short-shifters were harder on trannies, although I'm not sure I buy into why.

I'm not likely going to replace the tranny for a couple months. In the meantime I can get by on the street, and even in autox as our courses rarely get us out of 2nd gear (1st and 2nd gear are fine). But there's no point in me trying any more drag racing in its current condition, if I crunch almost all the time on the 3rd and 4th upshifts.

Thanks for the help/tips guys.

(hoping some of the experienced 5-speed guys will add some comments: Seb, Zo, etc.)
